Comments from Dr. Kelly Barnet, Past Director of Granberry Counseling Center made at the dedication of the Minden Granberry Ministry Site. The scriptural basis of the Granberry counseling ministry is John 10:10 which says, “ I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly.” We believe that a vitally important aspect of abundant life is our relationships with God and with one another. The ministry of GCC is helping people nurture their relationships with God and others.
The Granberry ministry was established in 1996 when Ray and Mary Anna Granberry from Lafayette made a donation to the Children’s Home. The building that we call the Granberry Counseling Center, the main office for the ministry, was dedicated in October 1997 and the first director came to work in January of 1998.
The ministry of the Granberry Center is to provide affordable, professional, Christian counseling to individuals, couples, and families throughout Louisiana.
Our counselors and therapists are dedicated people. They are dedicated to their work, to being the best that they can be at helping individuals, couples, and families through difficult experiences. They all hold a Masters Degree and are working toward licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists and/or licensed Professional Counselors or Social Workers. They are supervised by a professional who has credentials recognized by the state of Louisiana. Our staff are also members of national organizations such as American Association of Christian Counselors, the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and the American Counseling Association.
When I say that we offer Christian Counseling what I mean is that the counselors themselves are dedicated Christians. They have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Secondly, what I mean by Christian is that when we are in the room working with people who come to us for help we believe that the Holy Spirit is the primary resource for change in that person’s life. We believe that prayer is essential to the work that we do and the change that people desire for their lives when they come here. The Bible is our guide as far as how we help people. We use God’s Word to guide people to understand their situation and to know the Christ who wants to help them enjoy life abundantly.
Our ministry strategy is simply to be used by God in helping strengthen individuals and families so that they can successfully manage life’s challenges and live the abundant life. We are not just in business here to counsel but we each of us are ministers of God’s grace to the people who come to us for help.
Not only do we provide counseling to individuals, couples, and families we are available to churches and other groups to do seminars such as Marriage Enrichment Retreats, Parenting Issues. We also are available for group counseling on issues such as grief, divorce recovery, marriage enrichment, etc.
The Granberry counseling ministry is off to a great start. We are assisting people across our state through difficult times in their lives so that they might enjoy once again the abundant life Christ has to come provide us. We offer a word of thanks and appreciation to Ray and Mary Anna Granberry for their contribution. The Lord’s name is exalted because of their generosity to hurting people.
